Timber Rattlesnake DVD is finally done!

I spent most of this spring, summer and fall videotaping timber rattlesnakes in the wild and have produced a 20-minute high definition DVD which captures a full annual cycle of the snakes - from spring emergence to denning up for hibernation in the fall. The wait for neonates when they were finally born in late September was worth it as I was able to film several clutches with their mothers before they shed and took off. If you are interested in purchasing a DVD ($20), you can visit my website (www.thetimberrattlesnake.com) or send me an e-mail. If you order both a calendar ($15) and a video by e-mail, you will save $5.

Overall, it was a normal season with several gravid females each giving birth to six or seven neonates. We also had several big nuisance snakes, which is typical each summer. I'm encouraged by the fact that our population appears to be healthy and sustainable.

The DEC is working on a recovery plan for timbers in NYS but many of us are skeptical about the practicality of removing them from the Endangered Species list. Once that happens, the snakes will lose the protection which is currently making it possible for them to survive the threats of development and hunting. Without their status as threatened on the list, their habitat will become even more endangered than it is now, causing many sites to become extirpated. It will be interesting to see how this plays out over the years as the recovery plan develops.

Fall Has Arrived - Calendars On Order

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of this season's neonates. They seem to be late coming this year but the weather has been anything but normal. Just when I thought this would be the day, the nights got much colder than normal and now we have the rain. Of course, they could have arrived and I just haven't seen them yet. I'm waiting for the next sunny morning and I'll be out there with video camera in hand.

Stay tuned for photos and if you are interested in purchasing my 20 minute video of Timber Rattlesnakes in the Wild (all snakes!) let me know.

My 2010 Timber Rattlesnake Calendar went to print yesterday and should be available on September 21. They are $15 and if you are interested in purchasing one, let me know. Quantities are limited so place your order soon!

Combat Dance

I witnessed my second combat dance ever, and it was really something to see in the wild. It didn't last long but the two male snakes engaged in "battle" before the weaker snake gave up and retreated. The "winner" came back and claimed his territory. You can see the video on my website at www.thetimberrattlesnake.com/video.html.

Enjoy! and while you're there, order a 2010 Timber Rattlesnake Calendar!

Processing Snakes

Well, I take back everything I said about the nuisance snakes this year. We've had several big males in the neighborhood which we've picked up and relocated. We have started processing the snakes we pick up before releasing them. That entails tubing them, measuring, weighing and marking their tails. We can then keep track of their travels for the rest of the season. It will be interesting to see where they end up. . . hopefully not back in the neighborhood.

Visit from DEC

Dick Thomas came down for a hike and he was able to get some great photographs. We released two nuisance snakes and Bob Corneau processed them for weight and size. It was a great learning exercise.

We hosted a visit of summer interns from an environmental school in New York City. We showed them a few rattlesnakes and they were able to watch us release a nuisance snake which we had picked up the day before. They had never seen rattlesnakes before and were excited about seeing some up close in the wild. It was also fun for them to watch us handle the snake as we released it. On the hike back they helped clear some trails.

Summer Activities

The timber rattlesnakes are enjoying the cooler temperatures we've been having. The males do not seem to be traveling so far for food with the high numbers of chipmunks. That means fewer nuisance snake calls for us and fewer encounters with people and snakes. That's always a good thing!
